Report on the 9th Wah Yan Soccer League 7 June 2008 The 9th Wah Yan Soccer League was completed on 31st May 2008. A total of 19 teams formed by past students of WYK and WYHK enrolled in the league this year. The League started on 24th November 2007 at the School cement football field. Thereafter rounds of qualifying and knock-out matches were carried out. Finally, Friends from WYHK won the Championship in a tight Finale with Delay of WYK (4:3 through penalty kick) on 31 May 2008. In the "Elite" group, Vampire from WYHK netted the title by a resilient display against contenders 75ers and Youngsters and Shooters. A summary of the winners is tabulated below:
At the closing ceremony on 31 May 2008, all winning teams received their trophies and medals from our Principal Mr. Norman So who will retire in 2009. Moreover, the Champion received their Cup and medals from Mr. Norman So and a very special guest of honour, Fr. Deignan who was invited by Mr. So. Truly this special moment will reside in us forever. Two highlights of the League worth noting, namely an "Elite" league for teams who did not qualified in the qualifying round and a friendly match of its own kind by our winning teams against "Dolls United", a girl team comprising players of the Hong Kong Women Soccer Team were organised this year. ?It was observed that all teams enjoyed more chances to play and the game with Dolls United run for more than 2 hours. Taking this opportunity, the Committee would like to thank the Schools, Fr. Deignan, Mr. So, Mr. Tang Wai Choi, student helpers, all participating teams, alumni, and friends of Wah Yan for their support and enthusiasm and looking forward to welcoming more teams in the next League. Congratulations to all participating teams, for they had showcased great sportsmanship and enthusiasm. Through rounds of highly entertaining matches, Saturday Players deservedly netted the Cup with superb form and skills. The young First XV emerged as Runner-up whilst Millennium came Third with unrivalled will. Salute to 70's Pals too, for they showed the spirit of Wah Yan beyond compare. At the prize presentation ceremony, Fr. Chow thanked all participants and the alumni who donated the Cup in fond memory of the late Fr. Joseph Foley. With their support and generosity, the League will run in a triennium.
